What to know about writing to your MP.
It can sometimes take a few tries to get your MP to reply to your letter. But your MP is duty-bound to give a reply, so persist.
Dear [MP’s Name],
I am writing to you as a concerned constituent and ally of the transgender community.
In recent years (and particularly in recent months) I have noticed that the rights, dignity, and safety of trans people have come under constant attack in the UK.
From media stories that dehumanise and misrepresent trans lives, to changes in law and policies that threaten to roll back basic protections and right. The situation is becoming intolerable.
I know many trans people who are deeply distressed, isolated, and exhausted from having to constantly defend their own existence.
I cannot remain silent while they are pushed further to the margins of society. It is not enough to quietly disagree with the hostility, we must speak out.
As my elected representative, I urge you to:
- Publicly affirm support for trans people – not just in vague terms, but by challenging misinformation and standing up for their rights in Parliament and public discourse.
- Oppose any weakening of the Equality Act or the Gender Recognition Act – these laws are vital to protecting trans people from discrimination.
- Push for better access to healthcare and legal recognition for trans people, who face extraordinary delays and barriers to basic services.
- Hold public bodies like the EHRC to account when they appear to act in ways that compromise their impartiality or fail to uphold the rights of all people equally.
I know that not every MP feels confident speaking on this issue, and that the topic has become heavily politicised. But basic human dignity should never be up for debate. History will not look kindly on silence in the face of injustice.
Please, stand with trans people. Speak up. Push back against the tide of fear and division. Help create a society where everyone (regardless of gender identity) can live freely and safely.
Yours sincerely,
