What to know about writing to your MP.
It can sometimes take a few tries to get your MP to reply to your letter. But your MP is duty-bound to give a reply, so persist.

I am writing to you not as someone expecting agreement on every issue, but as a fellow citizen who believes in fairness, decency, and the importance of protecting all members of our society.
The growing hostility towards transgender people in the UK deeply concerns me. Whatever your views may be on specific policies, the tone and direction of public discourse are becoming dangerously dehumanising. Trans people – many of whom already live with significant hardship – are being vilified and scapegoated in ways that echo the worst moments in our history.
This isn’t about ideology. It’s about recognising that trans people are human beings who deserve dignity, safety, and the ability to live their lives without fear. That shouldn’t be a controversial position.
I know you may not support all aspects of current gender recognition or equality law. But I urge you to reflect on the harm being caused by the relentless campaigns to deny their existence, block their healthcare, and undermine their rights. These efforts do not protect anyone – they simply make life harder for a marginalised group already facing disproportionate levels of violence, poverty, and mental distress.
I ask you to consider the following:
- Do not support or promote policies that erase or exclude trans people from public life.
- Speak out against dehumanising rhetoric, especially when it comes from colleagues or media figures.
- Remember that many of your constituents are trans, non-binary, or have trans family members – and they are watching closely to see whether they are being represented with care and decency.
This is a moment where silence enables harm. Even if we don’t agree on everything, I ask that you show leadership by choosing compassion over culture war.
