President Trump signed an executive order that instructs states to criminalise and institutionalise people experiencing homelessness, addiction, and mental health disabilities. The language is thinly veiled, the goals are clear: erase visible suffering, enforce conformity, and punish deviation.
What this policy lays out is not just a crackdown…. It’s a blueprint for camps.
And if you think that’s an exaggeration, read on.
The Pipeline to Nowhere
When homelessness is criminalised, and mental illness is grounds for confinement, people are no longer citizens with rights. They are “problems” to be removed. The executive order incentives state-level laws that will funnel people into prisons, psychiatric facilities, or makeshift mass holding centres; “transitional facilities” in name only.
These places won’t be about help. They’ll be about containment.
And when those overflow, we know what comes next.
Call them what you want … “camps” is the only word that fits.
Trans People Are Already on the List
Now ask yourself: who is more likely to end up in those camps?
Trans people are already:
- Pathologised as mentally ill
- Criminalised just for existing in public
- Disproportionately affected by homelessness, poverty, and addiction due to structural discrimination
- Misdiagnosed or institutionalised when seeking help
- Denied housing, jobs, and safety
We’re not just at risk, we’re already on the radar and in their sights.
This order supercharges it.
Camps That Would Kill Us
If these “facilities” are created, they will likely:
- Be segregated by so-called ‘biological sex’, placing trans women in male facilities and vice versa – an open door to abuse, rape, and psychological torture.
- Deny gender-affirming care, even when it’s medically essential – no HRT, no support, no understanding.
- Have zero meaningful oversight, protections, or recourse – especially for those seen as ‘deviant’ or untrustworthy.
These are not just hypothetical concerns. We’ve seen this play out in US prisons, ICE detention centres, and even state-run psychiatric hospitals.
The cruelty is not a side effect – it’s the point.
What Starts as ‘Care’ Ends in Erasure
This is not about helping people. It’s about making them disappear.
The language of “mental health” is being weaponised against us – has been for years. The public is being groomed to believe that visible difference equals disorder, and that the only response is institutionalisation, correction, or banishment.
Once trans identity is defined as a mental illness and our lives as public disorder, what stops the state from sweeping us up in this dragnet?
Once trans identity is defined as a mental illness and our lives as public disorder, what stops the state from sweeping us up in this dragnet?
We Must Say It Loudly
This is not about “safety.” This is about cleansing public space of inconvenient people.
It’s about systemic removal.
And history tells us what happens when the state builds facilities to deal with undesirables.
If you’re not scared, you’re not paying attention.
If you are scared, please know you’re not alone.
This is a wake-up call for all of us in the trans community (although I’m sure most of us are already awake and kind of ‘punch-drunk’ from everything lately), and for every ally who claims to care.
What You Can Do
Share this post (see below for all the ways you can).
Get people talking before it’s too late.
Contact your local political representatives and demand they condemn this order and refuse to implement it.
Support trans-led homeless outreach and mutual aid groups.
Refuse to let people be quietly disappeared.
We’ve seen this before.
We know how it ends.
Unless we stop it now.
